I look at spiders and butter-flies . I watch caterpillars and moths . Sometimes I think I'm the only one who notices these things . But if it hadn't been for a crowded cafeteria , I wouldn't Have ever noticed Valeri . After all , I wasn't looking for new friends .
Valeri was a new student . She walked to class with her books huddled against her chest and her head down . He talked only when the teacher asked her a question . After a month at our school , she hadn't made any friend . At recess , she sat on a bench and read . If you asked who she was , you'd get a response like this , "She's in my PE class , I can't remenber her name ."
One day at lunch , I had nowhere to sit . Most tables were full , my friends scattered among them . But Valeri sat alone , book in hand , I walked over to her .
"May I sit here ?"I asked .
"Sure ,"she said .
The cafeteria was noisy , but silence hung between us . Valeri didn't seem to mind , but it drove me crazy . I searched my mind for things to say .
"So,"I said , "is that a good book?"Valeri gave a small nod and went back to reading . "What's it about?"I asked , after several more agonizing seconds of silence . She looked at me , her eyes sparkling .
"Well , it's called Eragon , and it's about a dragon! This boy , Eragon , finds this dragon egg when he goes hunging one day . He thinks it's a rock !The egg hatches and Eragon hides the dragon from his cousin and uncle until it gets too big ."
"That sounds cool."I said. I was about to ask her another question, but the bell rang.
As I rushed out of the cafeteria , I called to Valeri , "See you later ."
"Yeah,"she said,"see you later."She sounded doubtful .
A couple days later , I spotted Valeri looking for a place to sit at lunch .
"Valeri , come here."I pointed to an empty chair .
She sat down and pulled out her book . Everyone was talking about next week's talent show . "So ,what are you doing for the show? "My friend Erin asked my friend Kelly .
"Oh,I don't know , probably nothing,"Kelly sighed ."What are you doing?"She pointed to Valeri.
"Oh."Valeri put her book down ."I don't know . Maybe nothing."
The week flew by . Before I knew it . I was sitting in the auditorium , listening to a group of girls sing the latest pop songs at the talent show . I was bored out of my life , and I wanted it to end so I could read Eragon . I'd checked it out at the library , Then a shy girl walked on stage . I recongized her immediately . Valeri clutched a violin in one hand and a bow in the other .
She stared to play . The notes formed a soft , weet tune . Then it turned fast , then faster . The music stopped altogether before the tune retumed . Valeri ended the song with one hard , fast , loud note . The auditorium fell completely silent until we realized the music was finished . Still in a halftrance , we burst into applause . Valeri took a swift bow and walked off stage .
I smiled to myself . Valeri wasn't just a "quiet girl" .She knew about wonderful books and could play the violin like nothing I'd ever heard . Like a caterpillar or butterfly , she was beautiful and amazing when you looked closely .
Once upon a time the colors of the world started to quarrel. All claimed that they were the best. The most important. The most useful. The favorite.
Green said: "Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and of hope. I was chosen for grass, trees and leaves. Without me, all animals would die. Look over the countryside and you will see that I am in the majority."
Blue interrupted: "You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. It is the water that is the basis of life and drawn up by the clouds from the deep sea. Without my peace, you would all be nothing."
Yellow chuckled: "You are all so serious. I bring laughter, gaiety, and warmth into the world. The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, and the stars are yellow. Every time you look at a sunflower, the whole world starts to smile. Without me there would be no fun."
Orange started next to blow her trumpet: "I am the color of health and strength. I may be scarce, but I am precious for I serve the needs of human life. I carry the most important vitamins. Think of carrots, pumpkins, oranges, mangoes, and papayas. I don't hang around all the time, but when I fill the sky at sunrise or sunset, my beauty is so striking that no one gives another thought to any of you."
Red couldn't stand it no longer he shouted out: "I am the ruler of all of you. I am blood - life's blood! I am the color of danger and of bravery. I am willing to fight for a cause. I bring fire into the blood. Without me, the earth would be as empty as the moon. I am the color of passion and of love, the red rose, the poinsettia and the poppy.
Purple rose up to his full height: He was very tall and spoke with great pomp: "I am the color of royalty and power. Kings, chiefs, and bishops have always chosen me for I am the sign of authority and wisdom. People do not question me! They listen and obey."
Finally Indigo spoke, much more quietly than all the others, but with just as much determination: "Think of me. I am the color of silence. You hardly notice me, but without me you all become superficial. I represent thought and reflection, twilight and deep water. You need me for balance and contrast, for prayer and inner peace."
And so the colors went on boasting, each convinced of his or her own superiority. Their quarreling became louder and louder. Suddenly there was a startling flash of bright lightening thunder rolled and boomed. Rain started to pour down relentlessly. The colors crouched down in fear, drawing close to one another for comfort.
In the midst of the clamor, rain began to speak: "You foolish colors, fighting amongst yourselves, each trying to dominate the rest. Don't you know that you were each made for a special purpose, unique and different? Join hands with one another and come to me."
Doing as they were told, the colors united and joined hands. The rain continued: "From now on, when it rains, each of you will stretch across the sky in a great bow of color as a reminder that you can all live in peace. The Rainbow is a sign of hope for tomorrow." And so, whenever a good rain washes the world, and a Rainbow appears in the sky, let us remember to appreciate one another.
I have the bad habit of skipping to the last pages of a book to see how it ends while I am still in the middle of it. This habit annoyed first my Mom, then my friends, and finally even my own daughter.
Often my impatience wouldn't be confined just to the books I read but also to what they were reading as well. Finally one day my daughter told me in exasperation, "Dad please just read a book one page at a time like everyone else!"
At times I haven't limited this bad habit to just books either. I have also tried to skip ahead in my own life and figure out what to do months and even years from now instead of embracing each day as God intended.
I knew that the book of my life wasn't done yet and that I had many pages left to go. Still, that didn't stop me from trying to write the ending half-way through.
Time and again, I would foolishly jump ahead and try to solve every conceivable problem before it happened so I could reach that storybook happily ever after ending.
Life, however, doesn't work like that. God loves to surprise us, and you never know what new problem, change, or opportunity each new day will bring.
Recently when I found myself returning to that bad habit of rushing ahead and living in the future again, I found His truth coming from the lips of a special soul who gently told me I needed to "live one day at a time."
When I heard those words I smiled, turned the book of my life back to the right page, and thanked God for today.
There is no skipping ahead in the book of life. Each of us has to live it one page and one day at a time. Each of us has to have faith in God to help us to write it line by line and moment by moment. Each of us has to trust that our Heavenly Father will bring our story to its perfect end.
E: Welcome back! How was your vacation?
T: It was fantastic, but I'm glad to be back! Being a tourist is really tiring!
E: Where did you end up going?
T: Because it's off-season, we got a really good package deal to paris, so we went there.
E: I've always wanted to go to Paris. The Eiffel Tower is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the world! Did you go to the top?
T: That was the first thing we did. I have a few pictures. Do you want to see them?
E: Sure. What's this one a picture of?
T: Oh, that's a picture of me on our fourth day of travelling. I'm standing next to a famous fountain in the centre of the city.
E: You don't look very happy in that picture.
T: No, by that time. I was sick of sightseeing. I had had enough of art galleries, cathedrals, fountains, statues, and palaces!
E: So what did you do?
T: We spent that afternoon Wanking around a flea market. We had a few coffees, watched a movie, and went ofr a seim in the pool at the hotel.
E: My travel agent always reminds me to plan a day of relaxing for every 3 days of sightseeing. did you go to the Louvre?
T: Of course! You can't go to Paris without going to their most famous art gallery! I was surprised by how small the Mona lisa was though.
E: That's what everyone says! I can't wait to see it for myself some day.日常英语对话5：Business Trip
Z: I have some good news for you. We've decided we'd like to send you to Shanghai on a business trip this weekend.
Z: Don't you think that it'd be a good thing for you to get out of the office for a couple of days?
Z: I thought you'd be a bit more excited about this. Everything will be paid for and I'll send my assistant with you to take care of everything for you. All you have to do is get on the train tonight at 7pm.
L: The train? Will I be flying back then?
Z: Oh, no. We've bought your return ticket for you. I think you'll find it comfortable.
L: Will the train be very crowded?
Z: Oh no. The train hasn't been crowded at all recently. Besides, you're in first-class, so you'll be fine.
L: When is the first meeting then?
Z: They've scheduled the negotiation meeting for 9:00 tomorrow morning. That should give you enough time to have a quick shower.
L: Where will I be staying?
Z: We've booked you a room in the same hotel as your meetings, so you won't need to deal much with the transportation system.
L: That's very sensible. Would it be alright if I left early today to prepare for the trip?
Z: That's not a problem. Have a nap if you can. You don't know how tight the schedule is for this business trip.日常英语对话6：Business Trip
L: Did you get my email?
Z: I certainly did. Do you want to come in and give me some feedback about your weekend?
Z: How did the business trip go?
L: Well, to be honest, nothing is more stressful than going on a business trip with our boss.
Z: I understand. The last time I went on a business trip with the boss, I didn't even have enough to eat?
L: I also think that the company is pretty cheap with travel expenses. I spent half of the weekend on a train! Surely they could have afforded to buy a few plane tickets!
Z: Our company is quite conscious of the environmental problems that frequent flying causes.
L: I see. Well, then perhaps they could give me a few days off after a business trip. It was really tiring for me.
Z: I can ask the boss about giving you the day off today.
L: Thank you. I can't imagine getting much done today. I'm just too exhausted!
Z: No problem. Did you bring any gifts back for your departmen?
